Bay Gallery Home is very excited to welcome people back into our gallery now the lockdown has finally ended for non-essential retail.
This lockdown was harder than previous ones as we barely recovered from the Summer one before being thrust into the next two so it’s with great relief we can reopen giving you the opportunity to see the beautiful paintings we have imported during lockdown in the flesh.
We’ve also used the time we’ve been shut to make more velvet cushions and pouffes. You are going to love them! They feel and look amazing.
Come and feast your eyes on artwork by the oldest continuous race in the world. Indigenous communities across the world were particularly under threat from Covid but as the communities closed, very early on in the pandemic, across Australia they remained safe and in good health. The art centres are cautiously reopening so we’ll have more work arriving over the next couple of months.

Sadly we have had to close our doors again but we’re still trading online and by appointment during this winter lockdown. If you follow the gallery safety protocols you can pick up any purchases safely or we can send them to you via Royal Mail, Parcelforce or DHL.
Please keep an eye for new paintings on the website and Instagram, you’ll also be able to see new developments in the ‘My Country’ collection. Our made in Britain new cushion collection is online and we’ve uploaded photos of our made to order ottomans. Fabric is available by the metre so if you want to practice your upholstery or sewing skills we have beautiful fabrics in the gallery you can’t get anywhere else.
Don’t forget Tetbury’s small independent shops during this lockdown. We’re all working so hard to bring you things of beauty you can’t get anywhere else.
We watched with horror as the queue snaked down the road from the post office as people returned lockdown purchases to Amazon. Please shop locally and/or from independents across the UK.
On our website you can see new paintings by some of our many talented artists. They arrived yesterday and we sold one this morning so if you have your heart set on any of the paintings please don’t delay in ordering it.
The pandemic has forced people to reassess their lives in many ways. In the gallery we are finding people wanting to cover their walls in meaningful, exuberant art after staring at them for so long during lock downs across the world. As such we’ve selected artworks which keep you captivated letting your eyes wander aimlessly across the canvas. The new selection is a mixture of bold blues, oranges, greens and reds for those that need an uplift during Zoom calls or afternoons with the children. We’ve also catered for people who need a calming influence after a stressful day with pastel blue, pinks, browns and yellows.
The Aboriginal people have suffered so much but remain incredibly resilient. It serves as an inspiration to us every day to do the best under the circumstances - we’re hoping that the artwork will serve as uplifting inspiration to you too.

Bay Gallery Home wants to reassure you that over the coming months, while the world deals with this dreadful pandemic that our gallery will stay open until the authorities tell us otherwise. Online orders will be fulfilled while the post office remains open. DHL has assured us that they will maintaining their delivery service for the foreseeable future. If circumstances change will let you know via the Blog, Instagram and Twitter feeds.
Sadly one our art centres has been forced to close so there will be no new works from them until the danger of infection has passed. We will post images of our latest shipment from them on our Instagram and Twitter accounts @baygalleryhome .

Spears from one of the Central Desert Aboriginal communities we work with. These are made by the men as “men’s business'“ using Mulga trees.
A few years ago we visited the British Museum’s ‘enduring civilisation’ exhibition which was an incredibly moving experience. The skill required to produce these beautiful artefacts including the feathered string necklaces, pearl shell pendants and woven baskets was breathtaking. The exhibition revealed so much more about the gifted Aboriginal people than we were taught at school in Australia. It helped explain a deep intelligence connected to the land and animals which flew directly in the face of any colonial claims the Aboriginals were “primitives”.
Amongst the artefacts held by the British Museum many are sacred and therefore not supposed to be seen by the uninitiated - seeing them was a guilty pleasure but also helped us understand why they were so important to the Aboriginal groups they had been taken from. Large tranches of artefacts in Australia are held in the National Gallery of Australian in Canberra (among other state galleries/museums and private collections) with only the traditional owners allowed access to view them.
Next year marks the 250th anniversary of Captain Cook’s voyage which took him to Australia and ultimately led to the end of the Aboriginals traditional life and the removal of their cultural heritage. Manchester Museum is marking the event by returning 43 ceremonial artefacts to the Aranda people and Gangalidda Garawa people among other Aboriginal groups.
This repatriation of Aboriginal artefacts by Manchester Museum back to those they were taken from over the course of white Australian settlement will no doubt lead to healing and reconciliation between all those now occupying the vast Australian continent.

Bay Gallery Home is happy to share that our long awaited for Bush Onion cotton velvet has made it to our showroom.
The journey to get this velvet made encompasses ten’s of thousands of years, trips across the world, hours travelling to and from the artist Sarah Napurrurla and a lot of time finding designers with the skill to translate the Aboriginal paintings into repeat designs for velvets. Our designers have put their all into making our velvet range technically and aesthetically fabulous. It is another groundbreaking achievement for those collaborating with Bay Gallery Home helping make our vision reality.

Two of our incredibly talented artists who are painfully shy sit outside the art centre where they gather their painting materials before disappearing to paint. On their return they saunter in, often barefoot in clothes, they choose for colour and pattern, clutching exquisite completed works depicting the bush tucker and medicine of their Country. When we visit they are intrigued as to which work we choose to sell or translate into wallpapers. The painting on the art centre wall is inspiring us to upscale the next wallpapers in the collection!
It is a huge privilege to work with these women who empower us through their tenacity, fortitude and innate talent. Funds from each wallpaper goes to them and other artists in the Community providing painting materials, healthcare, transport and schooling in both Aboriginal and Western cultures helping to bridge the gap.

Bay Gallery Home brings you our My Country Ruth Blue, Red and Pink cotton velvet collection. As the latest edition to our award winning Aboriginal interiors collection we have chosen Aboriginal ‘Goanna Dreaming’ paintings by Ruth Nungarrayi Spencer selected on our last trip to the Central Desert communities we represent.
My Country embodies the Dreamtime stories still followed by this ancient culture for use in the every day.
One of the the four interiors surfaces (wallpapers, rugs, ceramic wall tiles and fabrics), My Country references the Aboriginal philosophy and creative process, whereby all of creation is in relationship, at one with the land. The original artworks' particular provenance and symbols - inspired by mapping myths, rituals and sacred topography - results in a compelling, versatile aesthetic with a most subtle compositional depth of field, imbuing spaces with wider horizons of the imagination.
Our designers used techniques combined with high-res scanning process to accurately match every detail and color of the artists’ paintings.
The beauty and quality of our velvets reflect the origins of indigenous creative process and high-quality materials and British manufacturing skill.
We also offer a bespoke Made to Order service as well as selling the velvets by the metre.
Bay Gallery Home recently wrote a feature article about Aboriginal art for London based I-M Magazine (Intelligent Magazine for Inquisitive Minds). The article serves as an introduction to Aboriginal art giving the reader a brief history of Aboriginal art and a broad insight into the different styles and areas the art hails from.

Bay Gallery Home is working hard on creating 'Songlines' our first collection of fabrics based on paintings by artists we proudly represent. We have developed the world's first Aboriginal velvets available in three colours with slightly differing depictions of the Goanna Dreaming (Warnu Jukurrpa) - essentially a love story set in the Central Desert of Australia. In keeping with our 'design with origin' ethos we have been faithful to the original artwork in the design work thereby protecting the Dreamtime story and the intent of the artist. Keep an eye on the website over the next month or so as beautiful tableware, blinds and cushions will be amongst our first offerings.
The winter nights have drawn in so why not look at our beautiful evening skies? Perhaps you'll see a cigar-shaped alien space ship (or meteor?) gliding through it. Over December we have many beautiful gift ideas for you (we should all treat ourselves to a guilty pleasure at Christmas time) and your loved ones including our stock of fabulous paintings and our new home and giftware items. Keep an eye on our website for new products as it will be updated over the next week. On December 7 we will be open late for the Tetbury, Gloucestershire Christmas light party. As the main event is on our doorstop we're the perfect place to party while you shop. We'll be keeping things merry by serving wine, beer and cheeses.
On December 18 we will be holding another event as part of the Tetbury Edit collective - we'll be sharing more on that later.
