2023 begins with New Art from Tennant Creek, Australia

Bay Gallery Home wishes you a Happy New Year! Refreshed after a glorious holiday we have exciting news to share with our friends and clients for 2023. We have embarked on a collaboration with artists from Tennant Creek, Northern Territory, Australia.

Among the artists we have are Ada Pula Beasley and Pammy Foster, both rising stars in the Aboriginal art world. Their impressionist paintings, achieved with careful brush and dot work, are breathtakingly beautiful.

Ada paints her Country, many recent works by Central Desert artists depict the devastating fires, She explains: “After the bushfires, when the rain comes and brings back all the bush flowers and bush medicine back again and make it green, this [is] why I do this painting, reminds me when we go hunting after the bush fire and see just black, then it rains and brings flowers back and the trees and the blue skies, and the snappy gum trees up the hill."

Pammy Foster takes an abstract approach to the depiction of Country. Her work captures the rhythm of the landscape with repeated motifs and engages an exaggerated palette to emphasise seasonal changes in the environment.

These and many other beautiful works from the our desert communities will be available online and at the Spring Battersea Affordable Art Fair 9-12 March. VIP codes for VIP tickets will be shared with you shortly.

Vinterior Magazine - Art Edit

Vinterior the worldwide online vintage, antique and unique ethnic resale behemoth has published their first magazine. One of Bay Gallery Homes paintings by Flora Nakamarra Brown, Mina Mina Dreaming was curated by Louise McKinney for the magazines first Art Edit.

Louise McKinney of A-I-R, a collective of leading cultural advisers from around the world, previously lead development programmes for world class galleries: the Lisson, Serpentine and Whitechapel. 100% Design 2019 - thank you to everyone who visited our Bay Gallery Home stand

Our recent foray into 100% Design London 2019 was four days of pure interior designer jubilance.

Bay Gallery Home offers colour and pattern with origin helping support the Aboriginal artists we represent. The Australian Aboriginals are the oldest continuous race in the world sustaining symbiotic relationships with the land. Designers were keen to embrace the traditional owners’ depictions of their land and Dreamtime stories and we enjoyed meeting so many professionals in interior design and architecture who worked across residential and commercial projects.

Some of the most interesting conversations we had, were with those in the commercial sector looking to add colour to the grey/black/wood/concrete/stripped brick interiors they have been specifying for years. One designer said he had being asked to specify internal gardens, including moss walls, but as an alternative he wanted to offer our Lilly Green wallpaper.

One of the best moments of a design fair for us, is watching people’s faces as they come across our stand and the Aboriginal designs for the first time. As we explain the origin of the designs and invite people to explore our stand, it’s great to see any self consciousness leave them, opening them up to a wholly tactile experience as they study the fabrics, wallpapers, tiles and rugs.

We were also thrilled many interior designers wanted to specify our ‘My Country’ collection for their own homes.

The Desert is a Botanical Garden

This painting reminds us of the the colours you find in a Van Gogh - the glorious yellows in the still life works “Sunflowers” and the colour of “Irises”.

It is of course the Australian outback with its ever changing shades as the sun moves through the day altering the colour of the plants and rocky outcrops.

Margaret Kemarre Ross’s family have been outbush for thousands of years collecting bush medicine from their Alyawarr land. Alyawarr is a rich botanical garden for its inhabitants. Each flower serves a medicinal purpose. The little purple ones, for example, can be used for the flu as well as easing kidney pain. When mixed with water the pink ones help with sore eyes and the yellow ones are used to wash their skin.

While expressing her passion for bush medicines paintings also serves to communicate her love of Country as it “keeps culture strong”.

Papunya: taking Aboriginal Desert dot designs to the world

Papunya Tula is the legendary site where the contemporary Aboriginal art movement bloomed becoming famous for its Western Desert dot art.  

Amongst the different displaced Western Desert people's brought to Papunya Tula (Tula meaning small hill where a Honey ant dreaming sits) were Tommy Watson, Clifford Possum and Ningura Napurrula, each of whom went on to become wildly successful international artists.  

The original company now operates from Alice Springs but we paid a visit to the existing art centre and found some of the sacred iconography depicted in the early works honoured while developing new interpretations of their ancient Dreamtime stories.

We had to keep a respectful distance while photographing the artists.  Close up the paintings were breathtaking.  Below is the landscape around the art centre.

Father's Day weekend special exhibition 17 - 18 June 2017

Bay Gallery Home is holding a special exhibition for father's over the Father's Day weekend to offering father's a glass of wine or coffee while visiting the gallery on Saturday or Sunday.

Aboriginal Father's teach their children the many skills needed to survive in the harsh Australian outback environment.  They are instrumental in teaching their sons how to hunt and share their wood fashioning expertise to make spears, boomerangs and shields from the incredibly strong Mulga tree found throughout the desert and depicted in many of our paintings.  (we will have examples of these on display) The Father's also teach their young boys and men the Dreamtime stories through secret ceremonies and initiations some of which can take months to complete.  This repetition of the Dreamtime through ceremonial dances and song is essential to the preservation of their culture including the deep knowledge they have of the land, animals flora and fauna.
